Oxytetra LA 20%

An Effective and Economical long-acting Oxytetracycline, especially formulated to achieve low tissue irritancy and pain at the site of injection.

Phenix OXYTETRA LA is a clear yellow aqueous solution containing 200mg/ml oxytetracycline base, (as HCI) in the form of magnesium complex. Its pH and optimal content of high grade polyvinylpyrrolidone, ensures minimal tissue irritancy. Oxytetra La Is carefully formulated to ensure effective absorption from the injection site to maintain therapeutic blood levels over a prolonged period.

Action
Following deep intramuscular injection, the OXYTETRA LA formulation provides sustained therapeutic blood levels of oxytetracycline. Oxytetracycline affects rapidly growing organisms by binding to their ribosomes and interfering with bacterial protein synthesis. Oxytetracycline is a broad- spectrum, bacteriostatic antibiotic. Susceptible organisms include many gram +ve and gram -ve bacteria, some protozoa, rickets, mycoplasmas and Chlamydiae.

Indications
Oxytetra LA is recommended whenever long-term antibiotic treatment or phophylaxis is required, or where repeat dosing is not practical or feasible. Oxytetracycline diffuses widely throughout the body, but achieves highest concentrations in the kidney, liver, lungs and spleen.

Contraindications
Severe liver or kidney insufficiency.

General Recommendations
Cattle Oxytetra LA is indicated for the treatment of pneumonia, pasteurellosis, foot -rot, joint -infection, actinobacillosis, mastitis and streptothricosis, and for the control of post-parturient and post- operative infections.

Sheep: Oxytetra LA is indicated for the treatment of pneumonia, mastitis, metritis, foot-rot and streptothricosis.

Pigs: Oxytetra LA is indicated for the treatment of pneumonia, erysipelas, joint infection, mastitis-metritis-agalactia syndrome and pasteurellosis.

Dosage and Administration
Ensure administration is by deep intramuscular injection into the anterior half of the neck.

General Dosage: 1mL per 10kg body weight (20mg/kg). For severe infections, the dosage may be repeated after 48 hours. To minimise local tissue reaction, it is recommended not to exceed the following amounts at any one injection site;

Side effects
A transient swelling may occur at injection site. Rare anaphylactic reactions have been recorded in calves following use of oxytetracycline injections. Prompt treatment with antihistamines is indicated. Use of oxytetracycline during the period of tooth development, including late pregnancy, may lead to tooth discolouration. Oxytetra LA is not recommended for use in horses, donkeys or cats and dogs.

Precautions
Do not dilute. Store in a cool place and protect from light. Give by intramuscular injection only.
