Pharmacillin - 300

A high quality Procaine Penicillin 300 mg / ml

Phoenix Pharmacillin 300 is a white sterile aqueous suspension of 300 mg / mL Procaine Penicillin G.

Action
Penicillin inhibits the formation of peptide linkages between growing strands of peptidoglycan in the cell walls of Gram +ve bacteria, resulting in incomplete formation and weakness. These weaknesses result in lysis and death of the bacteria cell.

Indications
For the treatment of infections caused by organisms which are susceptible to penicillin.

Contraindications
Not for the treatment of infections caused by organisms which are not susceptible or have developed resistance to penicillin. Not to be used in animals with a known history of hypersensitivity to penicillin containing products.

Administration
Administer by i/m or s/c injection. Large doses must be divided.

Recommended Dosage

Small Animals

30 mg per kg bodyweight (provided by 1 mL per 10 kg bodyweight)

Large Animals

12 to 18 mg per kg bodyweight (provided by 1 mL per 25 to 16.7 kg bodyweight) – unless otherwise prescribed by a veterinarian

Cats, Dogs

0.5 – 5 mL

Sheep, Calves, Foals, Pigs

2 – 5 mL

Dairy cows 400kg

16 – 24 mL

Horses, cattle 500kg

20 – 30 mL

Administer selected dose daily for 3 to 5 days

Toxicity
The toxic effects of normal administration are minimal. The LD 50 of penicillin ranges from 500,000 iu/kg i/v in anaesthetised cats to 3,500,000 iu/kg i/v in mice.

NOT FOR USE IN BOBBY CALVES

Side Effects
Uncommon. Penicillin injected directly to the CNS may cause stimulation, twitching and convulsions. The possibility of hypersensitivity reactions is far more common. Reactions from cutaneous irritation to severe anaphylactoid fatalities have been reported.

Withholding Period

Milk

Cattle

After three, four & five doses, milk intended for human consumption must be discarded during treatment and for 72 hours (6 milkings) after treatment.

Sheep

Milk intended for sale for human consumption must be discarded during treatment and for 14 days following the last injection.

Meat

2 – 5 mL

Cattle, Sheep & Pigs

Producing meat and offal for human consumption must not be sold for slaughter either during treatment or within 7 days of cessation of the last treatment.

Horses

Producing meat and offal for human consumption must not be sold for slaughter either during treatment or within 63 days of cessation of the last treatment.

Administer selected dose daily for 3 to 5 days

Presentation
100ml and 250ml plastic vials, and 250ml glass vials.
