Xylazine base 100mg/mL in a sterile solution for injection

 

Action:
Xylazine is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist.

 

Indication:
A non-narcotic sedative, analgesic and muscle relaxant for use in horses and deer.

 

Contraindication:
Shock, cardiac incompetence, severe respiratory depression, late pregnancy.

 

Toxicity/Overdose/Antidote:
10x normal dose could be fatal if untreated.

ANTIDOTE: DEER: Use yohimbine injection i/v.

 

DOSAGE:
HORSES: 0.6–1.0mL/100kg b.w. by SLOW i/v injection.
DEER: 0.6–1.0mL/100kg b.w. i/m.

Injection to be given into the anterior half of the neck in food-producing animals.

 

Side Effects:
Anxiety, salivation, tremors, vomiting.

 

Special Precautions:
Keep out of reach of children. Avoid contact with the eyes.

 

Withholding Times:
MEAT: 3 days.
MILK: Nil.

 

Human First Aid, Symptoms Of Poisoning:
If swallowed, DO NOT induce vomiting. For advice, contact a doctor or the National Poisons Centre (0800 POISON or 0800 764 766) immediately. If skin contact occurs, remove contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly. The antidote is yohimbine injection i/v.
